Main Stream: Benedictines
The charism of the MBS is to live monastic Benedictine life (prayer, community and work) while serving in mission — blending contemplative rootedness with missionary outreach. This includes: Prayer and community life rooted in the Benedictine tradition of ora et labora (prayer and work). Their life combines Benedictine prayer, stability, community and service with active ministry among the poor and marginalized.
The Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing were founded in 1885 as a missionary branch of the Benedictine tradition — rooted in the Rule of St. Benedict and sent to proclaim the Gospel where the Church is young or in need.
Their motherhouse is in Tutzing, Germany, from where missionary sisters were sent to East Africa (then German East Africa) in the late 19th century. The sisters established their first African mission in Pugu (near Dar es Salaam) and later founded Peramiho and Ndanda Priories in southern Tanzania, where they engaged in healthcare, education, pastoral work and evangelization. The congregation today counts over 1300 sisters from many countries serving on nearly every continent. Their presence in East Africa — especially in Tanzania and Kenya — remains a vital part of their missionary outreach.
