Main Stream: Franciscans
The charism of the FSCH is loving service to those in need, especially the poor, sick, and uneducated, inspired by the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Franciscan values of humility, simplicity, and fraternity. Their apostolate includes education, healthcare, pastoral care, and social outreach, integrating prayer and community life with active service. Sisters strive to manifest God’s love in daily life through both compassionate action and spiritual witness, making their ministry a living reflection of Christ’s heart.
The Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart were founded in the 19th century in Europe, emerging from the Franciscan tertiary movement that emphasized both contemplative spirituality and active service. Responding to the social and educational needs of the time, the congregation spread across Europe and later to North America and Africa. They established schools, hospitals, and charitable institutions while maintaining the Franciscan spirit of poverty, humility, and communal prayer. Over time, their missionary activity extended to Africa, including East African countries such as Kenya and Tanzania, where they continue to serve in education and healthcare.
